Nintendo Wii top games
By JEFF MUSKUS
Published: April 21, 2008
Nintendo sits atop the home video-game market. Its Wii, though less technologically advanced than Microsofts Xbox 360 or Sonys PlayStation 3, continues to outsell those machines and is now in more than 20 million homes.
So why are retailers having so much trouble selling Wii games?
Take Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It was one the most hotly anticipated video games of the year; it sold more than 1.4 million copies during the first week of its release, in early March, and broke records for Nintendo of America.
œWe certainly have a built-in fan base for Smash, said Denise Kaigler, Nintendo of Americas vice president for corporate affairs. œIm hoping that we can continue to generate success and awareness of the game.
But sales dropped more than 90 percent over the first four weeks, according to estimates from VG Chartz, a team of analysts who study video-game sales.
Some major retail chains ” including Wal-Mart and Toys œR Us ” have already begun bundling the Smash Bros. game with Wii machines for sales online, a sign that the base of hard-core gamers who went looking for the game has been depleted.
Retailers confirm the sharp drop. We sold a couple thousand copies in the first week, said Xavier Pervez, assistant manager at a GameStop in Fairfield, Conn. œIts dropped off significantly now, maybe 100 in each of the last couple weeks.
Toys œR Us has instructed its sales staff to warn customers that some Wiis cannot read the Smash Bros. disc, and to refuse to exchange the game if customers later claim it is defective. Some parents who receive that warning are just as happy to buy a different game instead. But Nintendo claims few Wiis are subject to the malfunction, and Toys œR Us sales staff said few customers have been dissuaded from buying or keeping the game.
œThe number we got back for return was pretty minimal, a saleswoman, Christina Giori, said. Maybe eight copies out of 500. Its something Nintendos really trying to crack down on.
A number of games that garnered critical acclaim in recent months, notably the cartoonish action-adventure game Zack & Wiki and the off-kilter action-adventure No More Heroes, have yielded disappointing sales.
Over the first three months of the year, only three other Wii titles broke the list of top 10 best-selling games compiled by the NPD Group, a market research firm: Super Mario Galaxy, Guitar Hero III and Wii Play, a sports game that comes with the purchase of a much-needed additional game controller. The Wii may not be behind the success of all those titles, though; Guitar Hero, for example, sold 2.2 million copies for the Wii, but 2.8 million copies for the Xbox 360 and almost 5 million for two versions of the PlayStation.
The problem is that, in marketing the Wii, Nintendo cast a wide net and caught more than the big fish. The Wiis innovative motion-sensitive controller and a price lower than the rival machines appeal to a broader audience than the traditional market of young male hard-core gamers. Younger children, women and older consumers, who historically have not been sought by the video-game industry, have discovered video games through the Wii ” just not that many of them.
These new gamers are content with the games they have, often going no further than the Wii Sports game that comes with the machine. They dont buy new games with the fervor of a traditional gamer who is constantly seeking new stimulation.
The average Wii owner buys only 3.7 games a year, compared with 4.7 for Xbox 360 owners and 4.6 for PlayStation 3 owners, said a Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter. œIt reflects the broadening of the demographic, he said. œNintendos market doesnt feel the same sense of urgency to buy every game thats coming out.
œYou dont see a lot of titles that reach 30 to 40 percent of the installed base, said a Lazard Capital analyst, Colin Sebastian. My in-laws in Texas have a Wii sitting on their living-room floor next to the TV, which to me is kind of amazing. They have Wii Sports, a Brain Age game, Wii Play. Thats about it.
Part of the problem, analysts say, is that other game makers have yet to embrace unconventional advertising methods that can reach this broader audience. Nintendo did it by promoting its memory game Brain Age on the radio.
œAdvertising on GameInformer and 1up.com just isnt reaching this audience, Mr. Pachter said. œWhen you make a game like Zack & Wiki or Boogie, which turns the hard core off and doesnt reach the masses, then youre in trouble.
Still, not all third-party publishers have found the Wii market difficult to crack. Multiplatform games like Ubisofts Rayman: Raving Rabbids, a cartoon action-adventure, have found receptive audiences.
Hudson Soft has had success with titles including Sudoku, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and fishing games.
œThe kind of person that buys a Wii is not the same kind of person that buys a PS3 or an Xbox, said John Greiner, the chief executive of Hudson Entertainment, the North American arm of Hudson Soft. œYou have to be very specific when you design a game and target not only the gameplay mechanics for that user, but also the marketing for that kind of a product launch.
Hudson has also benefited from an especially close relationship with Nintendo. Hudson developed Mario Party 8, consistently one of the Wiis top sellers, and has been one of the greatest beneficiaries of the Wii Virtual Console, which charges users to play classic video games.
Nintendo itself seems primarily focused on expanding this casual audience, while continuing to deliver sequels to its most beloved franchises including Mario Kart Wii, the latest incarnation of its popular driving simulator, which will be released next week.
Ms. Kaigler, the Nintendo spokeswoman, says the company hopes Mario Kart will serve as a œbridge title between casual gamers and core fans, with the help of a steering wheel device into which a Wii controller can fit.
Wii Fit, an exercise game due next month, is expected to receive more marketing dollars than any game in Nintendos history, Mr. Pachter said ” and the money will not be spent wooing young men. œWii Fit is just not aimed at hard-core gamers, Mr. Pachter said. œIts definitely aimed at the Oprah crowd. I bet they sell a million units a week for every pound that Oprah says she lost on it.

Cheap Wii Games
Nintendo and it's contractors are perpetually bringing out new releases for the Wii gaming console and it can be hard to know just which ones are worth buying
As we near the end of this year I thought I'd take time out to put together a short list of the best Wii games for 2007 - games that don't let down, games that have been systematically given high ratings from all the top review web sites, games that I myself have had a good time losing days of my life to.
This the cream of the crop for Nintendo's Wii console, but don't just take my word for it. Take a look around the net and you'll see all the big makes in gaming are putting these releases at the top of their list.
Super Mario Galaxy - Not just the best platform game on the Wii to date, but THE best game overall! This is a must-have for any Wii owner and seriously, if you don't like Mario then why the hell do you own a Nintendo? Fantastic graphics, fluid motion, crazy worlds to explore, awesome music. This game has it all! Why are you still here? Go and get a copy and get playing!
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Fantastic futuristic first-person fun! The keenest graphics even seen on a gaming console, period! Days of game play value, and replays galore! Incredibly in depth and complex worlds to expose and some of the coolest enemies ever to adorn a video game screen. This game was made for the Wii and the user-friendly controls feel entirely natural. If you love adventure you WILL love Metroid Prime 3.Click here for a deeper review of this game.
Resident Evil 4 - Taking the survival horror gaming genre to a whole new level. The adrenaline is set to "overdose" as you virtually have to run for your life in this the creepiest, craziest Resident Evil EVER! Make your way through a multitude of progressively chilling and atrocious enemies, the likes of which you have never come across. Atmospheric music and hours upon hours of solid, pant-wetting game play makes this unbelievable treasure for money.
Mario Strikers: Charged - Last but certainly not least comes the crowning game of Soccer, for when a regular game of Soccer just won't do. This is actually less a game of Soccer and more an action-packed fun-fest set on a field with a ball and goals. Frantically fast paced and glorious to look at, the online multi-player feature alone is worth the price of this highly addictive Mario "sports" bonanza! Click here for a more in depth review of this game.
Whether you're looking at Nintendo Wii game for yourself or for your kids, you really can't exceed those listed above as far as unbelievable value for money. All have long play and replay value, amazing graphics and audio and they all make fantastical use of the Wii controllers. I could have listed a number of other games in this list but in my opinion the others just weren't amidst the best Wii games. Check 'em out!

We have come across our fair share of Wii peripherals, but the Wii Crossbow actually appears like it could be used by police force officials to bring down the bad guys. Sure, the ping pong ball tip doesn't look too forbidding, but we're sure there's a razor sharp pointer underneath.
If you're concerned aiming is going to be an event, fret not. A laser sight is included to make sure you beat all your current scores in Link's Crossbow Training. Priced at $28, the Wii Crossbow is priced on the steep side, but you can always take it in the garden, load it up with Nerf darts and pelt the bejeezus out of neighbors cat. Alternatively, you could use it to save some Christian aid officials that inadvertently have came across hard times in war-worn Burma. You are Rambo.

It's hugs and kisses abound to be sure in the Rockstar halls, as its long struggle to get Manhunt 2 released in UK is won with an eighteen certification from the BBFC.
Rockstar's appeal to the Video Appeals Committee was subdued once before by a judicial reappraisal from the BBFC, but the VAC has now reconsidered its conclusion again in the light of "the High Court's counsellings on the law".
By a majority vote of four to three, the BBFC has issued Manhunt 2 an '18' certificate. But it doesn't sound too happy about it...
"As I have said previously, we never take rejection determinations lightly, and they always involve a complicated balance of conditions," said David Cooke, Director of the BBFC.
"We twice rejected Manhunt 2, and then pursued a judicial review dispute, because we considered, after exceptionally thorough scrutiny, that it posed a real potential harm risk.
"However, the Video Appeals Committee has again practiced its autonomous scrutiny. It is now clear, in the light of this decision, and our legal advice, that we have no alternative but to publish an '18' certificate to the game."
Rockstar said in a statement: "We are pleased that the VAC has reaffirmed its decision recognizing that Manhunt 2 is well within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment.
"Rockstar Games is dedicated to making great interactive entertainment, while also merchandising our products responsibly and supporting an efficient rating system."
No release date has been returned.

Discounted Wii Games
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (3.4 mil)
Developer: Sega
Publisher: Sega/Nintendo
Brought out by Nintendo in Japan, but by Sega in Europe and the U.S., the game has predictably become a colossus hit. The triple whammy of Mario, Sonic and the Beijing Olympics has proved too hard for Wii gamers to resist. The fact that it was a proper game did it no harm either. The alarming thing is the scope for betterment in quality and ensuant sales with the unavoidable sequel.
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (1.8 mil)
Developer: RedOctane
Publisher: Activision
Guitar Heros main draw is its groundbreaking and absorbing peripheral; seem familiar? Also unlike Dance Dance Revolution, the enfranchisement is still at the peak of its fame. However if the future of the series is downloadable content, then it will be fascinating to see how emerging Wii versions will adapt and even counter this.
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (1.6 mil)
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Capcoms port of their multi-million marketing game of 2005 has been a sensational success. Two ingredients seem to be at the heart of this: great controls and budget pricing. The accuracy and joy of taking aim with the Wii pointer seems to have spread through word-of-mouth alone, and has given the game real lagacy.
Rayman Raving Rabbids (1.2 mil)
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Ubisoft demonstrated some early brilliance with this title and leveraged their Rayman license to create a aggregation of above ordinary mini-games starring a appealing and unbalanced cast. While its clear to everybody now just how successful mini-game collections can be on Wii in terms of sales and evolution time, Ubisoft showed true foresightedness.
Carnival Games (1.2 mil)
Developer: Cat Daddy Games
Publisher: 2K Games/Global Star Software
Carnival Games more than any other title has become the bat with which Wii is clubbed so regularly by the hardcore. Its success is a bit of a enigma no doubt, but it genuinely is an approachable piece of software that captivates much of the charm that Wii Sports had at launch.
Sonic and the Secret Rings (1.2 mil)
Developer: Sega
Publisher: Sega
For a hero who seemed to be in endmost descent, Sonic and Secret Rings was a minor victory; in that it wasntt atrocious. As a matter of fact after the first few levels the game bettered quite drastically. It still suffered from the normal modern Sega design faults though, but the license constituted enough to part Wii gamers with their cash.
Red Steel (1 mil)
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Has there of all time been a more polarising launch game than Red Steel? Merchandising brawn seems to have won out here as the games most anticipating feature: sword fighting, was in reality its most imperfect aspect. A much rumoured sequel still holds eminent promise though as its growth will not be as time restrained as the first.
